With support from Savanna Premium Cider, Kaya FM 95.9, Sunday World and VUZU AMP

Sunday 29 May saw the 4th annual Savanna Newcomer Showcase rock the Soweto Theatre for its sold out show once again. Careers were made as SA’s 25 newest comedians were each given five minutes to show the comedy industry, talent scouts and the press what they’re made of in the hope of garnering votes for this year’s Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards®.

With 13 acts in the first half and 12 in the second, it was a jam-packed evening of applause, one-liners, body-shaking laughter and the occasional cringe-worthy moment as some newcomers knocked it out the park while others were simply knocked out.

Each year the event sees more applicants than before, with a whopping 39 newcomers registered in the category this year. Only those who haven’t performed at the showcase before get an opportunity to be on stage, but if the numbers continue to grow we’ll need two showcase sessions next year to accommodate them all. Incredible proof of Savanna Premium Cider’s testament to supporting comedic talent from the bottom up!

Trending on Twitter throughout the night, the audience took to social media to show their support for the young talent on stage as well as the MC who totally killed it, the legendary Loyiso Gola. Two things really stood out this year: there were more vernacular comedians than ever before (complete with Xhosa clicks and an Indian-vernac songstress) and an exciting rise in female talent.

Hailing from all over SA, Savanna flew the newcomers in (some of whom had never been on a plane before), put them up at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice Melrose Arch and gave them an experience that they’ll never forget. Being part of the audience was one thing, but chilling in the green room with your new fellow-comedian friends and all the established comics who came out to support the event was where things got really special. Roni Modimola, Mashabela Galane, the Goliaths, Robby Collins, Sifiso Nene, Dillan Oliphant, Yaseen Barnes, Mojak, Ndumiso Lindi, Nina Hastie and Pule were just some of the industry heavyweights that the newcomers got to hang out with, cementing it as once-in-a-lifetime occasion.

The party kicked off at 14h30 with banging tunes from Kaya 95.9 FM’s duo Rhythm Sessions’ Edsoul & Fang DaRhythm, a shisa nyama to feed the masses and complimentary Savannas. Adding to the vibe were Vuzu TV’s crew who captured the essence of the day along with Jo’burg’s top press and paparazzi.

Produced by John Vlismas and Taffia Keight of Whacked, you missed a treat by not being there but keep an eye on socials for when the show will air on Vuzu Amp.

Big thanks to Savanna Premium Cider, Kaya FM 95.9, Sunday World and Vuzu Amp for helping to put this event firmly on the map.

Want to see who’ll win? Get your tickets now for the awards event on 3 September at the Teatro at Montecasino. They’re only R250 – R295.

True to form, the organizers of South Africa’s most prestigious new talent comedy showcase have decided to bend their own rules so more Newcomers can get their time in the spotlight.

The Savanna Newcomer Showcase was developed to allow every eligible Newcomer comedian in the country a chance to come to Soweto and feature in a brilliant showcase. They are transported, accommodated and paid a fee, all courtesy of main sponsor Savanna.

Places in the Showcase are meant to be limited to 20, with four previous winners also performing. This rule was put in place to avoid overly long shows that put the last few performers at a disadvantage.

Due to an overwhelming crop of new, eligible talent, as well as the theme, “For the love of laughter…” which is all about the feel-good factor of great comedy, the organisers have decided to allow all 26 Newcomers to perform at the show.

We just couldn’t turn people with such enthusiasm and passion away – this is what the awards are about – celebrating local comedy, especially as we have secured a television deal with Vuzu Amp, the most exciting channel around.” says executive producer, Taffia Keight, “we discussed it, and the six extra comics represent 30 mins of stage time, so we decided to trim some other bits and voila – we have a spot for everyone.

At the show, they meet the press, network with fellow comedians, agents, managers and lobby for votes in the hope of winning a shiny Waldo statuette at the main awards show – the 6th Annual South African Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards®, held at the Teatro at Montecasino on 3 September.

The unique format of the show, where comics each have exactly five mintes on stage, takes place on Sunday 29 May at the Soweto Theatre, and starts with music and drinks from 14:30. The show starts at 16:30.

“It’s the best way to see the whole future of SA stand-up in one fast and really funny sitting – get there if you can” urges founder, John Vlismas.

The future of SA comedy. Where it all begins.

What’s new, funny and stands on a stage? Twenty of South Africa’s up-and-coming stand-up comedians. Where will you see them? At the Savanna Newcomer Showcase on Sunday 29 May 2016 at the Soweto Theatre.

Book your place at this one-time-only experience where the freshest comedy talent is given the stage at the iconic Soweto Theatre to find out if they’re the funniest Newcomers around – funny enough to be nominated for the Savanna Newcomer Award at this year’s 6th Annual South African Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards®.

The Savanna Newcomer Showcase kicks off as the first event on this year’s Award’s calendar. Each of the 20 new comedians (many of whom have never performed to a large theatre audience) will have exactly five minutes to do a stand-up comedy set, while seasoned comedians and the comedy-loving public look – and laugh – on. The aim of the event is to give the Newcomers a platform to show the industry what they’re made of, so that the industry knows who to vote for.

What’s more, look forward to special guest performances and appearances by previous Savanna Newcomer Award winners Yaaseen Barnes (2015), Loyiso Madinga (2014), Schalk Bezuidenhout (2013), Dillan Oliphant (2012), and Deep Fried Man (2011) (pictured).

Even though the Savanna Newcomer Award is not open to public vote, as a special thank-you to comedy-lovers, members of the public attending the Showcase will be able to vote for their favourite comedian on the night. These public votes will be tallied together with the industry’s votes to select five nominees who’ll be announced on 6 July.

Doors open at the Soweto Theatre at 14h30 for a pre-show shish nyama, banging house tunes from Kaya FM DJ’s and a complimentary Savanna Premium Cider on arrival. Ticket holders will not only have the chance to mingle with the future of stand-up comedy before the Showcase kicks off at 16h30, but as this will be THE place to be, they’ll get to rub shoulders with the best comedians in SA and top local celebs.

As a long-time supporter of SA comedy, Savanna’s got the apples to support new comedy talent and has for the last four years given new comedians a platform to perform ahead of nominations, where otherwise they may not have had the chance.

“In the sharp-witted world of Savanna, with its signature take on intelligent humour, we are proud to be associated with the Savanna Newcomer Showcase – discovering new talent and helping young people forge their careers in comedy. Since the launch of the brand in 1996, comedy has been part of our DNA – not just through the left-of-centre characters in our iconic TV commercials, but also by supporting comedy festivals and shows throughout South Africa,” says Tania Kotze, Savanna SA Marketing Manager.
