2019 SAVANNA COMICS' CHOICE AWARDS
For 2019, the Savanna CCA’s continues to evolve. With a record number of comedians registering to participate across the African continent, record numbers of South African comics getting involved, and the public getting even greater say in who takes home a Waldo, the SCCA’s continue to hold the SA Comedy flag high.
Ever innovating to improve the system, this year the following changes have been announced:
-The Headliner of the Year Award replaces the Savanna Comic Of The Year Award.
- The Savanna Comic Of The Year Award - possibly the most sought after award and considered the apex of the Comics’ Choice Awards, replaces The Gamechanger Award.
This means ALL registered South African comedians are eligible to take home the Savanna Comic of the Year Award, opening the playing field for any comic who makes huge progress in their career.
- The Chatz Connect Audience Choice Award is now open to Pan-African Comedians and voting is opened globally to welcome African and global audiences to add their voice to the process.
In addition, all feedback gathered from the industry has been incorporated wherever possible. Upgraded definitions on the T’s and C’s; award categories and category entry eligibility criteria as well as improvements to the system code and a revision of the voting process will all contribute to making the SCCA’s a world-class celebration of African comedy talent.
The organisers promise not only a slick and seamless voting process, but another brilliant series of comedy industry gatherings to recognise excellence unapologetically.
2019 THEME : FUNNY MONEY
Like the Loch Ness monster, money in the comedy industry is rumoured to be huge and fantastic.
But no one seems to ever see it, except for very few - who don’t seem to have any proof.
The topic of funny money remains a mystery to the many.
What is it? How big is it? Where is it? And how do you get it?
The comedy industry has burgeoned in the last decade,
where there were 30 or 40 comics working full time - now there are hundreds of comedians regularly gigging in SA.
The industry that may have been worth R60-80m a few short years ago now generates hundreds of millions of Rand annually in performance fees, product endorsements and television and radio deals.
In its ninth year, the CCA’s promises a show that will lift the lid on this enduring enigma.
From the financial black hole that is the open spot, to the hugely paying unicorn that is the 90’s corporate gig - and onto the holy grail that is the national 12 month full-rights usage campaign - there are so many levels of money in comedy, and everyone wants to know the numbers. What do agents charge? Who pays the tax?
Now, we are perched on the edge of another exponential growth spurt as the world eyes Africa for the next global comedy stars, and content deals are starting to show real growth across platforms other than linear TV.
